NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University Athletics announced on Tuesday the second member of its 2026 ODU Sports Hall of Fame induction class, former men’s soccer player Tim Hopkinson. He joins fellow inductee Maggie Simmermacher.
A forward from Nottingham, England, Hopkinson played all four years at ODU. His freshman season in 2010 saw him make four starts in 19 matches with a goal against VCU and a pair of assists against Towson.
He then broke through with a Second Team All-CAA selection, a CAA All-Tournament Team selection, and a Second Team All-South Atlantic Region nod in 2011. He notched four game-winning goals for the Monarchs and finished the season ranked 21st nationally with eight assists and he was also 25th in the country with 28 goals scored. A Second Team VaSID All-State honoree, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer named him to their National Teams of the Week after he scored a game-winning overtime goal at Georgia State and added three assists in a win over Hofstra. He added another Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week selection as well as a Disney Sports/NSCAA National Player of the Week award on Sept. 12 and earned a spot on the Stihl Classic All-Tournament Team.
His junior season in 2012 saw him voted to the First Team All-CAA as well as to the NSCAA All-Region Second Team. He paced the Monarchs’ offense with 10 goals and 25 points, recorded two game-winning goals, finished fourth in the conference in goals and fifth in assists, and ranked 27th nationally with 1.47 points per game. Hopkinson garnered NSCAA, College Soccer News, and National Player of the Week honors in addition to being named the CAA Player of the Week for Sept. 3-9. Hopkinson was the ODU Stihl Classic MVP after scoring a combined four goals with four assists in the Monarchs’ wins over Seton Hall and Winthrop.
As a senior in 2013, he rounded out his collegiate career by being named a Second Team All-American by the NSCAA and College Soccer News. Additionally, he was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually by the Missouri Athletic Club to the nation’s top men’s and women’s soccer players, and won the award’s fan poll. Other accolades that season included a spot on the NSCAA All-South Region First Team, being named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the year, a First Team All-C-USA selection, a spot on the C-USA All-Tournament Team, and VaSID State Player of the Year. Hopkinson finished the year ranked 13th in Division I with 12 goals, was 15th with nine assists, and was 19th with 28 total points. He was named the NSCAA National Player of the Week on Oct. 15th and tallied six game-winning goals. He concluded his time at ODU ranked third in program history with 85 points, was ODU’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 33 career goals, and finished seventh all-time with 19 career assists.
Following his time in Norfolk, Hopkinson played a couple of seasons for Ilkeston Town F.C. in the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division.
The rest of the 2026 ODU Sports Hall of Fame Class will be announced throughout the remainder of this week and the group will be inducted during the Jeff & Billye Chernitzer Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, September 25 in Chartway Arena.
