NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University Athletics announced on Wednesday the third member of its 2026 ODU Sports Hall of Fame induction class, former field hockey player Sarah Breen. She joins fellow inductees Maggie Simmermacher and Tim Hopkinson.
A midfielder from Melbourne, Australia, Breen garnered multiple All-Conference honors and postseason accolades throughout her four-year career at ODU from 2012-2015. As a freshman in 2012, she received NFHCA Division I Third Team All-American and WomensFieldHockey.com All-American Rookie Team honors and earned a spot on the NFHCA All-South Region First Team. Other honors included being named Rookie of the Year in Virginia, a First Team All-State selection, First Team All-CAA, and landing on the All-CAA Rookie Team. A three-time CAA Rookie of the Week as well as one CAA Player of the Week honor, she made 19 starts for the Monarchs, finished second on the team with 12 goals, including four game-winning goals, and compiled 32 points with eight assists. She finished her rookie campaign ranked fourth in the conference in points, shots, and goals and was part of the Victoria U-21 Indoor Team that won the Australian National Championship in January 2013.
Her sophomore season in 2013 led to a spot on the NFHCA All-South Region Second Team as well as All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Starting all 21 games, she recorded a team-high 77 shots, placing 47 of them on goal. She finished sixth in the conference in goals per game (0.57), ninth in points per game (1.29), and was second on the team with 27 points.
In 2014, she was named a Longstreth/NFCHA Third Team All-American and NFCHA All-South Region First Team selection after starting all 19 games for the Monarchs. An All-BIG EAST First Teamer and two-time Player of the Week Honor Roll mention, she paced the ODU attack with 10 goals while dishing out two assists, finishing second on the team with 22 points. Breen also notched four game-winning goals, was second in the Big East with 3.42 shots per game, fourth in the league in shots (65), sixth in goals per game (0.53), and tied for sixth in goals scored.
As a senior in 2015, Breen led the Monarchs with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. She finished the regular season ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in goals scored and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as well as earning First Team All-Region and Longsteth/NFCHA Division I All-American Second Team honors.
Over her four years at ODU, Breen scored 44 goals with 16 assists for 104 career points.
The rest of the 2026 ODU Sports Hall of Fame Class will be announced throughout the remainder of this week and the group will be inducted during the Jeff & Billye Chernitzer Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, September 25 in Chartway Arena.
